Karbon is practice-management software built for accounting firms. Its AI works on the firm's own data inside Karbon, which is the main reason to choose it over a general assistant1.
Best for: Firms that want AI inside the practice-management system they run work and client email through.
Not the right fit for: Firms that want AI to prepare returns, or a tool that handles client phone calls.
What Karbon does for accounting firms
Karbon covers workflow and project management, integrated email, client management, a client portal, tax organizers and binders, e-signatures, time tracking, billing and payments1. Karbon AI drafts and refines client email, suggests quick replies, summarizes long email threads and work conversations, writes a single client brief from emails, notes, work and billing data, suggests assignments and flags missed time entries1.
Two further layers are not yet generally available: Kai, described as an AI coworker that knows the firm's clients, work and team, and agentic workflows, both in early access. Meeting intelligence is listed as coming soon. Karbon says agents will take on workflows from client onboarding to tax preparation1.
On data, Karbon states that firm data stays within Karbon, is not shared externally or used to train AI models, and stays in-region where regulations require it. The AI runs on the Azure OpenAI Service, and administrators can switch AI features off for the firm1.
Published evidence
Karbon reports that more than 40,000 accounting professionals use it, and publishes an ROI calculator that estimates $39,191 saved per employee a year for its average customer2. That figure is the vendor's own model, not a measured study.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- AI works on the firm’s own practice data: clients, jobs, email, time and billing.
- Karbon AI is included in paid plans at no additional cost.
- States that firm data stays in Karbon, is not used to train models and stays in-region.
- Published per-user pricing, with automatic client reminders on the Business plan.
Limits
- Today’s AI features assist staff (drafts, summaries, suggestions); agents for onboarding and tax preparation are described as a roadmap.
- No phone handling.
- Monthly billing is only available for teams of four or more.
Choose another option if: You want AI to take on whole tasks with clients, including calls, rather than help staff write and summarize.
Pricing
Published: Team $59 and Business $89 per user a month, paid annually ($79 and $99 monthly). Enterprise is custom. E-signature credits from $100 for 100.
Questions to ask Karbon
- Which AI features are generally available today, and which are in early access?
- When agents arrive, what will they be allowed to send to clients without review?
- How are automatic client reminders configured on the Business plan?
- How would we migrate our current workflows and client records?
