Canopy is practice-management software for accounting and tax firms that bundles the client portal, documents, e-signatures, workflow, time and billing and payments. Its AI is spread across those modules rather than sold separately12.
Best for: Tax-focused firms that want one system for the client portal, AI intake, e-signatures, return delivery and IRS notice work.
Not the right fit for: Firms that need phone handling or deep bookkeeping automation.
What Canopy does for accounting firms
Every plan includes the Canopy Coworker, an AI coworker in open beta that plans, does and checks work across Canopy, with monthly AI credits for each user2. Smaller AI features include signature and date fields detected and placed automatically, and documents renamed to the firm's naming convention as clients upload them2.
The tax workflow add-on covers AI intake and task automation, return delivery with e-signatures, payment and identity checks, and return status tracked in real time, in one client portal. A close automation add-on scans client ledgers for issues before month-end, and a tax resolution module pulls IRS transcripts, tracks notices and fills more than 200 federal and state forms2.
We did not find statements about how Canopy's AI handles client data on the pages we read. Firms should ask before enabling it.
Published evidence
Canopy's pages describe features rather than measured client results. We found no named case study with figures on the pages we read.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Covers the tax workflow end to end: AI intake, return status, e-signatures, knowledge-based authentication and delivery.
- A tax-resolution module pulls IRS transcripts and tracks notices.
- Every plan includes the AI coworker and monthly AI credits per user, so there is no separate AI add-on to start.
- Every price is published, including add-ons.
Limits
- The AI coworker is in open beta.
- Several modules are priced separately, so the total depends on clients and add-ons, not only seats.
- Data-handling terms for AI were not stated on the pages we read.
Choose another option if: You want AI on the phones and in the inbox as well as in the portal, or your firm is mostly monthly bookkeeping clients.
Pricing
Published: Standard $74, Plus $109 and Premium $149 per user a month, billed annually. Tax workflow from $34 a client a year, close automation $10 a connected client a month, KBA $1.25 a credit.
Questions to ask Canopy
- What does the AI coworker do on its own today, and what does it ask before doing?
- Where is client data processed when AI features are used, and is any of it retained by a model provider?
- What would our total cost be with the tax workflow and close add-ons at our client count?
- How do clients without the portal, or without e-mail, fit into the workflow?
